Summary

Debut author Sally Thorne bursts on the scene with a hilarious and sexy workplace comedy all about that thin, fine line between hate and love。
Nemesis (n。)
1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome;
2) A person’s undoing;
3) Joshua Templeman。
Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other。 Not dislike。 Not begrudgingly tolerate。 Hate。 And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company。 Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job。 Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude。

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua。 And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either。 Or maybe this is just another game。

I have been avoiding Sally Thorne's "The Hating Game" book for too long。 I usually don't read the hype book most of the time because of marketing tricks and I have my reasons。 BUT when saw this book is being adapted into a film which is coming very soon。 Thought I have to give it a try, only for the sake of argument。 Now after finishing it, (No Offence) sill trying to understand what everyone saw in this book! Of course, everyone's choice is different and I totally respect them。 Even then, I wou I have been avoiding Sally Thorne's "The Hating Game" book for too long。 I usually don't read the hype book most of the time because of marketing tricks and I have my reasons。 BUT when saw this book is being adapted into a film which is coming very soon。 Thought I have to give it a try, only for the sake of argument。 Now after finishing it, (No Offence) sill trying to understand what everyone saw in this book! Of course, everyone's choice is different and I totally respect them。 Even then, I would say that the book was not worthy of so much praise。 So here is my two cents I mean my few words for this popular book。 - Childish conflict as a drama。 - Their hate-to-love relationship made no sense。- Main two character are not so likable。- Nothing new or unique here- OVERLY hyped - It seemed like a movie script, not a novel。- Adapted movie? Yes! I am looking forward to seeing it。 。。。more

It was good。 I just wish it was less problematic!The Ableism: Lucy said something like "you should love your son even if he's crazy and homeless" to Josh's dad。 And then one other time the R-slur was used by Josh。The fatphobia with Josh's boss。The HR jokes that were NOT funny。I'm just sad about all those things cause it really was a sweet story。 It was good。 I just wish it was less problematic!The Ableism: Lucy said something like "you should love your son even if he's crazy and homeless" to Josh's dad。 And then one other time the R-slur was used by Josh。The fatphobia with Josh's boss。The HR jokes that were NOT funny。I'm just sad about all those things cause it really was a sweet story。 。。。more

You go, girl! 💜

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨/5 This was so well written, intelligent, witty, funny and sexy (even though the tension I thought I’d encounter would be way bigger than it was) No spice at all really, but it was cute。 Good characters, great dialogues, good development overall。 This was made for a movie script。 I am really excited and I think the movie is going to be immaculate (by that I mean way better than the book) I couldn’t give it four stars because there was a middle part where I felt like I was reading the ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨/5 This was so well written, intelligent, witty, funny and sexy (even though the tension I thought I’d encounter would be way bigger than it was) No spice at all really, but it was cute。 Good characters, great dialogues, good development overall。 This was made for a movie script。 I am really excited and I think the movie is going to be immaculate (by that I mean way better than the book) I couldn’t give it four stars because there was a middle part where I felt like I was reading the same chapter/scene over and over again, a little repetitive and boring between the beginning and the end, but overall enjoyable。 I did laugh quite a bit so I am pretty sure the movie is going to slap! 3。75/5 。。。more

I have a theory。 Hating someone feels disturbingly similar to being in love with them。I really liked this book。 I loved how the book started off with this workplace hatred, or more like, workplace games, where they both are competing with each other at every turn。 It was absolutely lovely。 The competition, how they observe each other's every move, how it evolves into this semi-fake-real friendship-relationship that cannot be labelled until the last moment。 I’m twenty-eight years old and it I have a theory。 Hating someone feels disturbingly similar to being in love with them。I really liked this book。 I loved how the book started off with this workplace hatred, or more like, workplace games, where they both are competing with each other at every turn。 It was absolutely lovely。 The competition, how they observe each other's every move, how it evolves into this semi-fake-real friendship-relationship that cannot be labelled until the last moment。 I’m twenty-eight years old and it seems I’ve fallen through the cracks of heaven and hell and into purgatory。 A kindergarten classroom。 An asylum。Lucy Hutton works at a publishing house at a position similar to her nemesis, Joshua Templeman。 As they sit across from each other, they play games: the Mirror Game, the Staring Game。 They are all games to see who could win。 But, then, an elevator ride leaves Lucy feeling like no one could ever kiss her like Josh does。 As Josh and Lucy fight their attraction and figure out where they stand with regard to their workplace tension, there is a new position opening up that they have to compete for。 Is it okay to hate and love someone all at once?Essentially, this book does have its fair share of 'hating' but it has a lot more of Lucy and Joshua playing games。 If you are strictly looking for a passionate hate turning into pining into love, then this is not it。 There is certainly passionate hate for a short while but it quickly turns around and evolves from there。 There are some other tropes that are commonly seen in rom-com books: height difference, sharing a bed and a room。 The rest of this review contains spoilers and quotes from 'The Hating Game'。He sits up straighter but the corner of his mouth moves。 I wish I could use my thumbs to pull his mouth into a huge deranged grin。 As the police drag me out in handcuffs I’ll be screeching, Smile, goddamn you。I just love that trope where the woman has never seen the man smile and is just so intent on seeing that smile even when she believes that she hates him。 Imagine if a smile is what she wants to see as she's being dragged to prison, then she must want to see it pretty badly。 This is proof that this is her version of loving him。 I start a game I call You’re Just So。 It goes like this。 “You’re Just So 。 。 。 Ahh, never mind。” I sigh。 He takes the bait。“Handsome。 Intelligent。 No, wait。 Superior to everyone。 You’re coming to your senses, Lucinda。”This is so amusing。 At the end, we get to see that Josh did end up guessing her password and was actually amused by it。 And that's how he knew so much about Lucy。 So it's no wonder that she wanted to find out more about the guy who hardly gave anything away。 I like how he used the planner to keep track of Lucy's outfit, their arguments etc。 I like how curious she was to find out more about him and hence invented this game to see if she could figure him out。 “I’m going to work you so fucking hard。”“So your dream was definitely about someone you work with。”“Yes。 He’s leaving B&G very soon, so maybe I need to make a move。”“You’re sure about it。”“Yes。” Lucy was talking about Danny Fletcher, who was leaving to freelance into designing。 But, from this few sentences, you can see why Josh thought it was him。 He knew that Lucy would have been sure about him leaving the company because of the bet they had made, because Lucy would have been thinking that she would get the position。 No wonder he decided to kiss her in the elevator。 The plight of the little humans。 There is no dignity for us in this oversize world。This has nothing to do with Josh or Lucy or anything really, but I am five feet so I can totally relate to Lucy。 The aim of the game is to do this for the rest of your life。 Screw human civilization and all it entails。 This elevator is home now。 This is what we do now。Do not fucking stop。His lips curve and I touch his face。 The first smile Joshua’s ever had in my presence is pressed against my lips。 I pull back in astonishment, and in one millisecond his face has defaulted back to grave and serious, albeit flushed。If I’d ever thought he was good-looking before, in passing or noticed in irritation, I never knew the full story。 When Josh smiles, he is blinding。 My heart is pounding and I frantically catalog this moment in the half-light。 It’s the only one I’ll get, while delirious with fever。If only I could hold on to this moment。 I already feel the sadness that will hollow me out when it ends。It is incredibly great that they can convey so much to each other through a kiss。 No kidding。 As they kiss, they have totally established the rules of this game and they know every single aspect。 Shows how perfect they are for each other。 I love how he smiles for the first time in this moment, when he believes that she actually really likes him and has dreamt about him。“You’ve broken me down so completely, I can’t even handle it when a guy tells me I’m beautiful。”Dismay spreads across his face。“That’s why I’m crying。 Because Danny told me I’m a beautiful girl, and I nearly fell off the barstool。 You’ve ruined me。”“I 。 。 。” he begins to say, but he’s got nothing。 “Lucy, I—”“There’s nothing left you can do to me。 You win today。”From the look on his face, I think I’ve landed a punch。 His shadow recedes along the floor, and then he’s gone。A huge bouquet of lipstick-red roses。 I pinch open the little envelope and the card says three whole words。You’re always beautiful。It was heartbreaking to see how the past few years had hurt Lucy and how Josh's behaviour hadn't made her feel more beautiful。 Especially since we know, that like every other book, there was never any hate in this relationship, only like and then love。 I felt a twinge of pain for Lucy and then for Josh, because he had hurt the woman he loved。 I can't believe Lucy had thought that Danny had given her the roses and that message, especially since it is 'lipstick red' but I am glad when she finally gets to know it is Josh。 We are adults undertaking a team-building activity in a professional capacity, so naturally we spend several minutes horsing around, striking poses with our paintball guns and making sound effects。 As kids, we do this。 How non-surprising if we do it as adults too。 “Dad calls you other names starting with J, but never your real name。”“What?” He looks alarmed。 “You’ve told your dad about me?”“He’s mad at you for being so mean。 Julian and Jasper and John。 One time, he called you Jebediah and I nearly peed myself。 You’d have to grovel to my dad, that’s for sure。”Josh looks so disturbed I decide to cut him a break and change the subject。He looked so alarmed and disturbed at the thought that the father of the girl he loved thought poorly of him and it is so damn adorable。 Joshua and Lucy at work:“You scare three-quarters of B and G employees absolutely senseless, but only because the other quarter haven’t met you yet。”He smirks。 “Such a bunch of delicate sissies。”“Even if he kidnaps and tortures you, don’t tell him what you’re doing for me。 He’ll use every bit of information he can to screw me。”“Wow, you guys really are mortal enemies。”“Yep, to the death。 Pistols and swords at dawn。”When she left, she paused by my desk, and looked at me, and laughed。 It was the kind of laugh tinged by hysteria, like she’s just heard the funniest thing。“Good luck,” she tells me。 “You’re going to need it。 This is beyond HR。”Mr。 Bexley puts his head out of his office, looks at us both, and shakes his head。 “Hell in a handbasket。 I tell you, hell in a handbasket。”A witchy Shakespearean crone has nothing on him right now。“Once I told them my reasons for leaving, they were pretty understanding。 Helene said she’s always known it。”“Reasons。”“I had one weekend left to make you love me。”I gape in horror。 “You didn’t tell them that。”“Yes。 You should have seen Jeanette’s face。”“Pretty big gamble, Josh。 Hell in a handbasket。”It's so crazy and romantic that Josh quit。 I was totally expecting it ever since he asked Lucy if she would be fine with him handling it back when she was deliriously sick。 I love how he's gotten himself hired onto a rival company so they can still play their games to an extent and still compete, because this really works for them。 I love how Jeanette from HR has ultimately given up on them because she's received so many complaints from them and then suddenly Josh is quitting with the ultimatum that he will make Lucy love him in a weekend。 I liked Helene, she was an understanding boss and supportive and she was wonderful。 I liked seeing her smile when she saw Lucy and Josh leaving for the wedding together。 “My hostage。 My blackmailed, unwilling captive。 Stockholm Shortcake。”I just love this because of its lay on the words 'Stockholm syndrome' and the nickname, 'Shortcake'。“Why do we do it? Stare at each other?”“I know why I do it。 But you go first。” He thinks I won’t call his bluff, so I do。“I’m always trying to work out what you’re thinking。” I toss him a triumphant glance, as if to say, See, I can be honest。 Sort of。“I stare because I like looking at you。 You’re interesting to look at。”Why I love the Staring Game。Confessions and realisations of love:I fall asleep, my cheek against the warm seat, my face turned toward him, like it always has been。 Like it always will。I open my eyes a tiny crack。 We’re in a parking garage。“We’re home,” he says。I think the unthinkable。 I should have been thinking it all along。 My eyes slide closed and I feign sleep。“You need to wake up,” he whispers。 A kiss on my cheek。 A miracle。I love Joshua Templeman。You love him。 You love him。 You always have。 More than you’ve ever hated him。 Every day, staring at this man, knowing every color and expression and nuance。Every game you’ve ever played has been to engage with him。 Talk to him。 Feel his eyes on you。 To try to make him notice you。“I’ve always wanted to be friends with you。 But you didn’t smile back。 You’ve been one-up ever since。”“I couldn’t。 If I’d let myself smile back, and be friends with you, I probably would have fallen in love with you。”“I forgive you。 You forget, I’ve been a complete bitch to you。”“But you never would have been, if I’d just smiled back。”“I wish you had。” My voice breaks traitorously。“It made no difference。 I loved you the moment I saw you。”“Since the moment I saw you。 Since the moment you smiled at me, I felt like I was falling backward off a cliff。 The feeling has never stopped。 I’ve been trying to drag you down with me。 In the worst, most ill-conceived and socially retarded way possible。”All of this was just wonderful。 “You can’t keep secrets from me for long。 I know you too well。 I’ll get it out of you。”“Well apparently I’m a complete open ebook。”I wish I can one day use the term 'complete open ebook' because I do read ebook versions a lot more than paperbacks。 His walls are the blue of my eyes。 I’ve been a bit slow。“But that’s the prettiest blue in the world!”“I know。 Good lord, Lucinda。 I thought I’d be busted the moment you saw this room。”Obviously, he wasn't busted。 I honestly wouldn't think to connect an eye colour with the colour of a room because it could be a coincidence with common colours, except with colours like robin's blue egg colour which makes all this so much sweeter。 I love how Josh had his room painted after meeting Lucy and was annoyed the whole time because meeting her changed his life but he didn't know why he was doing this。I am eagerly waiting for the movie that is set to release soon。 Lucy Hale as Lucy Hutton seems to be a perfect fit。 I am not entirely convinced of Austin Stowell as Joshua Templeman, based on the trailer, so I hope the movie changes my mind。 But they did get the height difference, they got the Staring Game, the Elevator Kiss。。。they also intensified the hate-relationship they share, taking it on to physical altercations, and brought on more drama I believe, and I cannot wait。 Onto and onwards to the movie now! 。。。more

Was it awful? No。 Was it the best book I’ve ever read like everyone was making it out to be? Also no。 The entire first 2/3 was so boring, absolutely no plot。 I did like the last third a lot, which is why it’s a 3 star read。 Like I said it wasn’t bad, but it had potential to be so much better。

Spoiler alert!!!!!!!I don’t know why I started reading this super cringy book and how on this world I managed to complete this (probably because of the 2021 reading challenge) I am not going to read any of the Sally Thorne books perhaps。 At first, I thought it is like Chetan Bhagat books, but it’s worse。 It is like reading a drama or series script with a literature vibe。 I usually list things that I like of a book, but I need to write why I absolutely hate this one cause I can’t grasp the fact t Spoiler alert!!!!!!!I don’t know why I started reading this super cringy book and how on this world I managed to complete this (probably because of the 2021 reading challenge) I am not going to read any of the Sally Thorne books perhaps。 At first, I thought it is like Chetan Bhagat books, but it’s worse。 It is like reading a drama or series script with a literature vibe。 I usually list things that I like of a book, but I need to write why I absolutely hate this one cause I can’t grasp the fact that it has such a high ratingFirst of all the protagonist, Lucy is an absolutely stupid girl。 I mean she thinks being fat, being blonde, being tall everything is a problem because of her own inferiority complex。 Secondly, Sally literally stated how handsome Josh is and how short Lucy is on every page。 I know people think it’s a bit awkward that a 6 feet 4 boy dating a 5 feet girl, but is it that important that a modern writer who is supposed to help people to remove such stupid thoughts is continuously normalizing this in her writing? Thirdly, why in this world Lucy is always horny? I mean I didn’t download the book to read written porn。 But there was an erotic explanation of everything, every place they go, everything they do is somehow sexualized。 I would have digested this but it was too unnecessary in some places。。 Lucy said she doesn't love him only for his body, but in the whole novel, it was clear that she is only craving for his body。。。。Fourthly, they work in a leading publishing company, right? So why in this world they are always playing staring games? They are always busy noticing what each other do? I know some people might say why am I searching for reality in a novel。 But don’t you feel that as an almost 300-page novel, it is way too much unrealistic? Fifthly, Sally literally lengthened the book without any reason。 There were no ups and downs in the story。 Just after reading a few chapters, anyone can guess what is going to happen! I at least expected some breathtaking moments at the end surrounding their interview。 But what happened at the end was too disappointingly predictable。The only thing I liked about the book is the character Josh and his mother。 ( I am saying Josh is at least bearable) The only time I started to like Lucy was when she was defending Josh in front of his father, but to my utter disappointment, sally made that part melodramatic again。 I mean what’s wrong with this writer。 I guess it’s a teenage romance novel filled with adult explanations。 I can’t remember last when was I so disappointed after reading a book。 。。。more

Found this book pretty annoying to read and the hating back and fourth between the character childish。 I enjoyed about 60 pages of this book as it got near the end but for the majority of the time was forcing myself to read it。
